Congregational Church to show documentary addressing homosexuality, Bible scripture

The First Congregational Church United Church of Christ will present, “For the Bible Tells Me So,” a documentary that seeks to reconcile homosexuality and Biblical scripture and reveals that Church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based almost solely upon a significant and often malicious misinterpretation of the Bible.

The film, which will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in the church sanctuary, addresses literal reading of scripture dictates, noting that Christians live their lives today without feeling obliged to kill anyone who works on the Sabbath or eats shrimp.

The screening will be followed by fellowship and refreshments. Donations will be accepted at the door to cover the cost of the film rental. Any additional money received will be donated to the United Church of Christ’s William R. Johnson Scholarship fund for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender seminary students, named in honor of the first openly gay man ordained in the United Church of Christ.

For more information about the film, visit http://www.forthebibletellsmeso.org. The church is located at 301 Cottage Road in South Portland. For more information, call the church office at 799-3361.
